Olympic Games, Helsinki

July 19, 1952


Olympic Games in Helsinki, Finland. Although Canoe & Kayak events were introduced into the Olympic programme in 1936, no Australian team was entered. However a FCC paddler, Keith Jackson was nominated for the C2 1000 & 10,000m events, but a team was not selected inspite of good qualifying times

This Revolution against the communist government of the day ran from 23rd October to 10th November 1956 when USSR intervened with military force. Many refugees fled Hungary during this time.

Melbourne Olympics

The Olympic Games, held in Melbourne was the club's high point to date with Bill Jones (ECC)and Tom Ohman (FCC) placed 5th – 1000m and 7th - 10,000m with Green and Brown's bronze medal in the 10,000m K2. Red Cross Murray Marathon created

December 26, 1969


In December 1969 Mark Thornthwaite ran the first Murray Marathon for seven boats (ten paddlers). December, 1970 was the first fully competitive major Red Cross Murray Marathon, the race continues today, although now held in November. Fairfield Canoe Club members have enjoyed great success in this event both winning and creating records.
