Murray River Marathon (Massive Murray Paddle) 50 years old this year! Snippet 21

Since the first Murray Marathon was run in 1969 FCC members have been regular participants – either as individuals, relay teams or land crews.

As part of the History project, members Kel and Joan McMeeken (Murray marathon 1980) presented us with a copy of “The story of the first Murray River canoe marathon 1969” written by the instigator of the race, Mark Thornthwaite. It turns out the Kel’s mother Hope McMeeken was the original Red Cross contact for Mark and together they were responsible for establishing the MM as a major Red Cross fund raising event.

Following the successful implementation of the paddlepower program for young paddlers the club has established the Junior Development Fund for the specific purpose of supporting paddlers in the 12-18 year age group. We envisage providing coaching support, help with attending competition and possible assistance with club uniforms and equipment.

2016 Awards

I’d like to begin by acknowledging the traditional owners and custodians of the land and river at Fairfield, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation.   We pay our respects to their Elders both past and present.

Today we’ll be presenting a series of awards which recognize performance, improvement, dedication and club spirit.

Awards have a racing focus but we’ll also be talking about the wider FCC – social, touring, supporting each other.
